I feel you.. In the camera department, the Moto G stops impressing. besides the wonderful Camera+ APK, all you can do to take great photos is have huge lights lugging around with you (doesn't sound ideal for a snap or too). Hopefully Android L update will fix this issue we are having.

If Android File Transfer isn't working for you, try rebooting the phone while it's plugged in or check if USB Debugging is enabled in the Developer Menu. if all fails i would invest in using the Bluetooth capability of the phone.
