I've found two apps that work for rotating the home screen. The simplest (free and no ads) is Rotation Locker by madmack (note that for Auto mode to work properly you need to long-press it). There's also the ad supported Screen Rotation Control by jubo co (no long press needed). Enjoy :)

It used to work, but at some point stopped - perhaps a recent firmware upgrade broke it. However, it didn't break it completely: on my Galaxy Nexus, if I power cycle the phone with a USB device (e.g. mouse or keyboard) already connected then USB OTG will work - I can even unplug that device and...
