I think this is a widespread issue. Was happening with my phone all the time. In UK linked to a 2014 model vw golf. However, since lollipop update and most recent patch (v20h-eur-xx) it seems to have virtually stopped. I know this doesn't solve the issue, but maybe reassure you that it isn't...

Have you opened the google+ app and checked the settings there? 3 dot button (there's a name for that isn't there?), then settings, then auto backup. I realise they're provably the same settings as on the photos app, but maybe going in via a different route may kick something into action ...
