The cellular frequencies are the same, so building penetration is the same. If one carrier has more cells closer, that will help, but each carrier frequencies, being the same, behave the same. There is no magic, just physics of radio propagation.

Google phones get updates from Google. Phones bought elsewhere get updates from the carrier. You can download the Google factory images and fastboot flash it. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#takju
