So I tried the headphones on another KitKat phone (albeit only briefly, playing one of the pre-loaded tracks on a store phone) and there didn't appear to be any issues. Also, I tried connecting my phone to some Bluetooth speakers and that also didn't appear to have any issues.

I have tried the headphones on other phones (with earlier Android versions) and they work fine.
