Most if not all the reports I've seen say they were dropped or in some other way mishandled and that's what caused the cracking. I've purchased five of them for myself and family, so far not one issue with a cracked screen.

Why not? I have one that I take with me everywhere, another that I leave in my home office and a third in reserve just in case. The "reserve" is the first one I bought, an 8GB and the other two are the 32GB versions.

What I'm interested in is only the podcasts of a local hometown radio talk show. Their web site has a place to download the podcasts. I'm not sure if they are "main stream" enough to be known to the app. Is that possible?

I'm just going to take a wild shot at this because I've had the same thing happen with my android phone (Galaxy S3). I was told to pop the back off, remove (in your case, unplug) the battery, then put the battery back in. It worked like a champ with the phone twice now.
