In some instances it'd be useful to have info display though the clear cover with it closed but the phone won't let it happen. Is there any way to override it, maybe using Tasker or something?

Same here, a few days ago it wouldn't go five minutes without crashing but I've just had two days clear. I installed a wake lock app, used standard launcher, uninstalled a bunch of apps I don't use much, and not risked turning it off. I don't know why it's now stable, though still laggy at times...

In case it's useful, I had a problem several times where I could be heard on the phone but not on hangouts. The phone has three mics so I guess they're used differently somehow. Both times a reboot fixed it.

Are you using Sidesync? That might cause battery to drain. That was my experience anyway.

You can Google ways to dry it out but I heard rice is good as it will absorb the moisture.
