I've tried multiple cords, including the stock ones. My wife also has the Nexus 5 and it will connect. Same cord with my phone -- nothing. Tried turning off developer options. Rebooted the phone. No joy.

MTP is already checked. The phone is not recognized by Windows. AirDroid is already installed on the phone, but I have not used it. Does it support direct phone to computer transfers without going over the Internet?
