Yes, a classic cause of thermal runaway. Since I really like this phone, I hope something else is not going on.

I have something similar. My Always On Display (I assume that is what you are talking about) goes from very dim to bright, while on the charger and sitting on my desk off the charger. No notifications at all. Not a huge deal, I suppose. More of a curiosity thing.
