Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

How does yours look like now? I get roughly the same as the top comparison shot you posted on my current s9+. Btw couldn't tell any difference on the bottom comparison?

It happens in a dark room. Try covering the light sensor and you'll see the flcoekring in full.display

Where is this RGB chart you are referring to? Just a quick survey here to examine the quality of the s9+'s screen. I created the following PNG files with screen balance at 2%: 1. Open Https://www.describee.com/b.png in a dark room with brightness set to max and tell me which squares you can't...

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

I have 2 S9+s at home (the other belongs to my sister) so I did the Display Tester test on her phone too. At 30% and 100% brightness, square 7 and 4 are very visible on her phone respectively. Meanwhile, on mine, square 7 is barely visible at 30% and I cannot see square 4 at all, even at 100%...

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Check this out: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12520/the-galaxy-s9-review/7 Seems like we sort of have an explanation for this phenomenon, and why the X performs better than the S9 in this regard.

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Thank you for testing this out. Has anyone tried the Display Tester app and check the banding test and swipe until you see the black saturation test? At 30% and 100% brightness, I can see only up to boxes 8 and 5 respectively (i.e. 7 and 4 and below show up as black to me). I wonder if there is...

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Thanks! Please let us know if flashing back fixes it. I noticed that even when I use the screen balance app, there is another issue of black pixels "dancing" in videos. Sort of like a dithering effect. Does anyone get that too?

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Just wondering if you guys could help with a simple test: Let me know which squares you see are completely black, at 30 and 100 percent brightness. Mine is completely black at 7 and 4 respectively.

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Ok I finally managed to replicate the black crushing issue and it gets really irritating when you see it. If you have Netflix try watching friends from.college, season 1 episode 5 from 1:10 onwards. The sky is simply crushed to black.

I always thought that was a compression artifact. But now that I've viewed it on my desktop monitor, I agree with you that I can spot black crushing.

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

My comparison device is an s7 edge which also seems to have the same issue... So... I tried the black panther trailer and everything looks good to me in a dark room. I don't have brightness at 0% though -- can't make out any dark areas in that low brightness. Is that the issue you are referring to?

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

Mine looks like that too. But for the life of me I cannot tell any significant black crush in a completely dark room. Maybe it happens when brightness is at 0% but I cannot tell because the rest of the scene is too dark for me anyway. But when I brighten it up to an acceptable viewing brightness...

Camera EXIF timestamp bug when shooting RAW+JPEG

No, you can only shoot in JPEG or RAW+JPEG. The option is in Pro mode under resolution settings.

Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

I went to several shops today to check if the colour banding issue exists on other S9+ units. Strangely, all of them appeared fine. I guess if the black crush is related to the colour banding, we could perhaps have a fix.
