    GSM iPhones are not location specific (except the China model) and will work on all carrier frequencies. If he's only getting edge, there's likely an issue with the phone.

    Sprint uses a CDMA network, which doesn't require a SIM card. The SIM tray on Sprint phones is purely for global GSM usage when travelling.
