I would expect the n4 to get official updates until the release of the nexus 6 or whatever it will be. There will always be unofficial support as this phone is still more than capable of running new software.

Make sure the phone is not plugged in when trying to get into fastboot. Sometimes the phone thinks you are trying to get into download mode.

You might have an app that is conflicting with the settings.

It may be a problem with the syncing? I personally do not have this problem and have 4 accounts set up in the e-mail app. What does happen sometimes is that I will delete something, the message will reappear in my inbox for a brief second then disappear again.
