If you want to root the phone, you have to do it BEFORE you upgrade to 4.4. Once you take the KitKat upgrade, you can't root.

Part of the problem is that Android Central has separate forums for Ultra, Maxx and Mini. Development efforts and root methods are the same for all three, so you really need to review all three forums. XDA Developers has a single Ultra/Mini/Maxx forum, making development threads easier to follow.
