That's exactly what I've tried, and what I did last time this happened (it worked then). Last it crashed because of a failed stock firmware update, this time its failed for apparently no reason at all and reflashing latest stock rom as before hasn't worked although the phone shows it has latest...

Thanks for all your help guys, but panic is (mostly) over. I spent a few hours on it last night, I initially used the stock on the sticky as my phone is carrier-free. When that failed to reinstall I flashed the unbranded stock for Nordic countries I9300XXEMC3_I9300NEEEMC1_NEE. That didn't work...

So this morning my S3 wanted an (official) software update, so I set it to download via Kies over wifi. I have never had a problem with this before. It downloaded fine, but about halfway through installation the update failed, and the phone auto rebooted, giving me the dead Android on its back...
