I have been having problems on and off all weekend, navigating a 5 hour trip. Often, Google Maps shows me on a side street rather than the freeway, and tries to re-route me back to the highway.

You may want to stay at 32MB. Some people have had issues (me included) with 64MB cards. Occasionally I get an error message that my SD card was unexpectedly removed, then it reloads. I've tried a few fixes, even reformatted my card to FAT32 after backing up my data, but I still get the error...

Do you hear it for every different number you dial? If it's just a few, it might be a ringback tone.

If you're not buying a refurbished S4 from Verizon directly, make sure whatever you buy is the Verizon version and not rooted, or a demo phone.

I did the same switch when the S4 was released. (Anyone want a cheap Droid X2?) I paid full price and stretched it over 12 months in order to keep unlimited data. You have to do it in a Verizon store, though, because the side shops (at least last May) couldn't do the payment part.

Do you have to do a "factory" reset (clearing user data), or will a simple power cycle fix it?

Make sure to leave sync turned on in the pull-down menu.

Maybe some in the group are not replying to all but only individually. You can't control how everyone else replies. if it's intermittent like that what I would think.

Adapt sound setup guides you through a mini hearing test, so it is very user-specific. Make sure you are in a nearly soundproof room without distractions when you set it up. I ran through it a few times with similar results. I thought my hearing was getting bad until I saw the original post above!

I've even used my phone while inside the zip lock bag. I had to adjust the volume for a call, but the screen still responded while the bag.
