this is happening to me as well, I have not detected an specific pattern, it happens randomly when screen is turned off, you turn in on and it is disconnected, all that have been mentioned before is OK ( I have experience with other nexus devices) running 4.3 stock rooted.

I just test it, I pinned an album and opened /data/data/com.google.android.music/cache/music and the album songs are there, there is no Artist/album information but you can transfer the files to wherever place you need. I think that part of the confusion was that there is actually a similar path...
