Hi I'm not 100% sure about this, but the release dates are normally driven by individual carriers. Verizon is notorious for being slow on pushing updates out. In the case of the S3, I'm sure they will have to do "compehensive testing to ensure the wonderful bootloader is working just fine"!

I was thinking of something similar.. but I'm going to try it on some of the cheaper cases first! Otter is great at replacing their cases, but methinks a 2" hole in the back might cause them a problem! Let us know how it goes russ
