Do you have the latest update for your phone? Can you transfer data through your cable(drag music and pictures from your computer onto your s4)? If you can, there might be a problem with the battery itself, and not the cable/usb. Make sure none of the pins on the cable are missing/bent.

I think that mms and possibly sms use a different radio than voice calls. Are you getting 4g service in your area?

Most of the phones come set with "global" settings as standard. If you switch it to "lte/cdma" if you're on verizon or sprint it might help you get better reception. Apps that I like are action launcher pro, pie controls, and instagram since facebook has gone down the drain lol.

Even though your virgin phone is canelled make sure it's turned off. Also, it wouldn't hurt to contact virgin to make sure that your line is cancelled. Also, are you using the stock messaging app?
