If my dad buy a nexus 5 sprint replacement device from best buy while he is in New York, will it work on the New Zealand telecom network, 3G and 4g in auckland? Is it carrier locked and what frequencies will it support?

In New Zealand, on telecom I think we use 3G 850mhz and 3G 2100mhz also 4g lte 1800mhz. Is it compatible with those?

I was hoping that when my dad goes to the US in a few days if he will be able to pick up a google nexus 5 16 gb black in the sprint replacement device format. Will this mean it is still carrier locked? If it is carrier , can I buy it from best buy and use it overseas?
