Figured it out. Two steps: 1. Swipe down on the month label. That opens up a view of the entire month below. 2. Swipe left or right, but NOT on the month label! The swipe has to be on the expanded month, below the label. I had been trying to change the month by swiping, double-tapping, etc. on...

I've tried looking in the android Quick Start Guide (for 5.0) but the section on the calendar is very short. There is a link for more information but that takes me to information for the pre-lollipop version. Ive tried menus, swiping in all directions, but nothing I do seems to change the month...
