Free version of EasyTether doesn't support UDP, so no gaming and etc. PdaNet is also good, but I find myself using EasyTether the most. What do you mean by "won't establish a solid connection"? Can you provide a detailed summary of what the problem is?

Yeah doing it way wrong. I use the phone to tap into a wifi network and share it via usb tether. But that's got it's draw backs too :( 3g is not enough even with full reception. 4g maybe? I don't know haven't had the (dis?)pleasure of using 4g yet.
