You can use allo just like an sms app. I only use it for Google Assistant because i don't use the voice recognition for assistant and i don't know anyone else who uses allo. As far as i know it doesn't function with other sms apps, only other allo users.

It uses Google's "messages" app. I think it's probably the standard on the Nexus phones as well now. It's a solid app, nothing crazy and nothing seems to be left out that you could want in an sms app.
