Google just confirmed the GNex will not get 4.4 at all, so there goes that theory.

That's disappointing, but I guess this day had to come eventually. I'm sure we'll get some 4.4 ROMs from Cyanogen and others, but it would've been nice to have an official one. For that matter, it'd be nice to have an official 4.3 update.

Chromecast requires iOS 6 or above. So yes, you're screwed.

Technically rooting isn't destructive. It's unlocking the bootloader that wipes everything. If you're unlocked, root away and you'll be fine. If not, I think you're out of luck. There was an exploit that allowed rooting the G-Nex without unlocking the bootloader, but Google patched it in 4.2.

It can be choppy if the WiFi signal isn't very strong or if you have a lot of traffic on your network. You can try setting the video quality to 480p instead of 720p in the Chromecast extension settings. Obviously the video won't look as good, but it should help to smooth out the playback.
