I know this is an older post, but thought I'd say that I just had this happen to me after forgetting the lock pattern for my HTC Desire. I had to turn off 2 step verification on a pc before it would accept my Google credentials. Hope it helps someone :) Sure had me screwed!

I couldn't find a direct way to recalibrate it, but restarting it from the settings seems to have straightened it out.
