In addition to whats been said above, lyrics must be ISO-8859-1 encoded, not UTF-8. UTF-16 works too, but it will increase the file size. All other tags should be UTF-8 encoded. id3 v2.3 or v2.4 it doesn't matter, but id3 v2.4 is preferred. You can set the encoding using the Kid3 Tag Editor...
