It may sound basic, but what helped me eliminate this problem which I sometimes have when I switch from charge only mode to USB mass storage mode to prevent my X from rebooting is to slide from screen to screen when I plug in and then when I switch modes.

Check out pure messenger widget its paid but gives you the sense like facebook widget (and many others)

I have astro and just tried myself, the file downloaded and extracted with no problem but when I opened the extracted apk file the install was unseccessful. So my suggestion was not a fix, sorry.

Check out Catch Notes (used to be 3 bananas but they did a major overhaul so if you used 3 bananas check out Catch as its night and day difference). Great widget, you can pin individual notes to the screen, set reminders, sync, take pics, record audio, etc.

do you have a file manager like astro on your phone? it maybe needed to open the file if the apk is in a zip folder.

I am with a few other posters, check out GoChat! I stopped using it when the facebook app update came out but went back becuase of the lack of sound notification for chat.
