When i tried through device manager, it allowed me to set new lock. But once done, it said "your phone is already set with a lock, you wont need this new password to unlock" the new password is not overriding the lock on my phone. Can you help?

Even after so many attempts, I am not getting "forgot pattern" option. I tried Android device manager, but when i set lock through this, it says "your nexus is already set with lock, so you wont need this password to unlock". I dont know what to do. I definitely dont want to reset my phone to...
