Same problem. I have tried every fix I can find. Do not disturb cycling during/after call, disable battery optimization for phone and messenger, reboot, change from LTE to 3G. The only thing that worked for me was the last, but data was 25x slower... Lots of discussion here at Google...

Most of these players are playing the 5.1/6 channel audio streams. Not always playing them well but playing them surprisingly enough.
