So it seems after just over a year and a half my galaxy nexus is slowly dying. Just out of the blue about 3 weeks ago it started not wanting to charge when getting plugged in (seems to work ok right now), and now the power button doesn't really seem to work. It pretty much stopped working...

If you updated for a 4.1 to 4.2 ROM and didn't update TWRP then that is probably the problem. I had the same thing happen to me when I updated from 4.1 to 4.2 and had forgotten to update TWRP. Just download/flash the most recent TWRP and it should work just fine.

****False alarm, problem solved. Just needed to go into the file browser and open a picture from there, then all the others showed up just fine.

Successfully flashed the 8/22 nightly and restored everything with Titanium Backup. So happy that there's finally an awesome boot animation :)

Questions from a complete rooting/ROM noob here (rooted for the first time last week) - If I'm coming from the 8/13 nightly and want to flash the 8/22 one, do I need to do a data wipe, or can I just wipe the cache/dalvik cache? If I do need to do a data wipe, I can use Titanium Backup to back...

No case, no screen protector. Only dropped the phone once and luckily it bounced off my foot before it hit the ground and only has 2 small marks on the side.
