    Microphone issue after getting wet

Personally, I use a vacuum cleaner to suck the water out of the phone--using compressed air will blast it inside further. Then I put the phone in a ziploc plastic bag along with a dehumidifier substance like silica gel that will create a very dry atmosphere. Leave it there for a few days to...

Google Pay / Huawei pay /Apple pay - yay or nay?

Here in the USA phone payment acceptance is highly variable. Outside of major cities you must also carry credit cards, debit cards, and cash, in my experience. I find it isn't worth attempting to use Google Pay, because even if the store offers it half the time it doesn't work or takes longer...

Pixel 3 owners: what's your next phone?

My Pixel 2 is still running well and taking great photos, which is a major consideration for me. If/when the 4a comes out I will take a hard look, but may hang in there for a 5. I am sorely tempted by the iPhone 12 based on the reports, especially the small one. Love, love, love smaller phones...

    Local backup possible?

Not sure what you are looking at, but if you go here you can read in English about how to download your data using Google Takeout: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3024190?hl=en

Apple getting rid of the lightning port

I don't think it's that strong on the Android side of things. Sure, iPhone lovers are unlikely to switch if they lose wired charging, but there are so many options on the Android side I strongly suspect a lot of people might think twice about purchasing a new phone that also requires them to...

    Local backup possible?

You can also use Google Takeout to download everything for local storage if you want to. I periodically do that for my photos, which are stored on a PC and also backed up to a portable hard drive.

Apple getting rid of the lightning port

Aargh! Everyone does tend to follow Apple's lead on this type of stuff. I see it as a move to force people to buy chargers. I already have a large variety of cables and USB C charge blocks, making it so that I can leave them in strategic places and not have to carry around a pile of crap along...

Can we expect a price drop?

My guess is that Google won't drop the price of the Pixel 3 more, but might offer special deals via Project Fi. Sign up for service and get a Pixel 3 for an additional $100 off, or something like that. They are currently offering $100 Fi credit with a Pixel 4.

Huge downside to no fingerprint on the 4

I guess I would have to test, but what happens when you roll over at night and reach for the phone to check the time? Does that trigger the face unlock? Or, in the meeting when I reach for the phone to check the time? Seems to me that will trigger the unlock, but maybe I am wrong. I want to only...

    Google launch event

But on the boat or inside the cabin on the boat wide angle is much more useful. I think it really depends on what you shoot. I used to carry an SLR with a whole bag of lenses and the most used was the prime lens, followed by the wide angle. Telephoto shots tend to almost always be too blurry or...

Huge downside to no fingerprint on the 4

Another thing is I don't always want my phone to unlock when I look at it. For example, when I am in a meeting I often put my phone face up on the table so that I can keep track of the time and watch for any important messages. But, I rarely want the phone to actually unlock during the meeting...

    No unlimited full rez photo/video.

I've run a few tests of "High Quality" vs. original resolution and there was no visible difference that I could see, even under extreme magnification. Yes, the file size shrinks using High Quality, but whatever Google is doing to reduce file size is near magic.

Huge downside to no fingerprint on the 4

Sure, but the scenario is I pull off the road to check my phone for messages, or a map, or to take a photo and I currently only have to pull off one glove and boom I'm into the phone. Or skiing I'm on the chairlift and want to see where my wife is on the hill or to take a photo, so again one...

Huge downside to no fingerprint on the 4

In my experience not many apps offer fingerprint unlock, but when they do it is hugely useful. I suspect it will be awhile before all of them offer facial unlocking as an alternative on both iOS and Android. Usually app developers add features on iOS first too. Plus, I ride a motorcycle and...

    Charging overnight?

I've always left my phones charging overnight while I slept. Batteries inherently limit the charge current as their voltage climbs and most phones and chargers have built-in charge controls that will cut back on charging when the battery is full. One reason to always use the OEM charger with...
