you might try installing Wake Lock and setting it to level 4 as soon as the phone boots up. take out the battery and hold the power button down for 1 min. (unplugged) resinsert the battery and try powering up. if it doesn't work, repeat until it does. it might take 20 or 30 tries...

battery is brand new, 2 weeks old and original. as i wrote, this doesn't work at all unfortunately. I cannot get in to the boot menu on upstart.
