Hi Keith: did you ever connect it to the computer via USB? Or did you copy any files to the phone's internal storage using a wireless connection?

Very intriguing. My N3 -- no USB connection to the computer after the factory reset -- has worked for more than 24 hours now without the IndexService bug, and with the same PDF files on the SD card. Fingers crossed.
