Check out the simplified root/rom/recovery thread in the stickies. If your baseband is zv4 or zv5, you can use the gingerbreak app to root. If you have zv9, you will need to either downgrade, or use jcase's gordita exploit.

What clock speeds have you been using? Often you have to bump the Min speed upt to 480 for ics and jb roms.

You can trade some of that clock speed for stability. I used to run at 600/749, and it was rock solid, and still pretty quick.

Are you using the camera button to select options in recovery? It's not intuitive, but that's the button you have to use to select options.

Most of the up-to date recoveries can make an ext4 partition. I recommend the zengarden recovery.

You have to use either cronmod's "fixed" int2ext script, or use an app like link2sd to do that.

In order to do that you'll also probably need to delete the mounting scripts from the inti.d folder of the rom before you flash it.

You need to install a new rom. If your recovery still works, just put a rom and gapps on your sdcard, wipe and flash. If your recovery is also a black screen, then you need to use Droid@screen to display your screen on a PC. Just follow the sticky called how to fix black screen with custom rom...
