I use Nova Launcher to handle this (I prefer single press actually). I'd imagine various launchers can handle this without needing to root. (For me this is a no-brainer as far as UI design goes. Add insult to injury because the default to get to recent apps is such a long long-press.)

Well, it seems to be working fine now - it still sometimes takes a couple tries but that's semi-ok for voice recognition. It's possible we were earlier yelling "OFF" instead of "Stop". I think it's a design decision - you should turn alarms off not stop them; but either they decided on "Stop"...

A theory - Mine worked this morning and I think it's because I was actually using the device when the alarm went off. i.e. already unlocked the phone. When the alarm goes off and I pull it out of my pocket while it's locked - I think that's when the alarm's voice controls don't work. Will test.
