The problem might be the charger.

There are 2 types of ROMs for htc one, stock android and sense (most have minor tweaks and improvements). I got back to sense 5.5 after some months from the GPe and I like it so much more than stock android.

Get the sim out or put it in airplane mode, connect via wi-fi, and check again for software updates, mine worked, but before the 4.2.2 update I recieved another very small update.
