This was intentional by HTC by what I understand. They have a longer charge time and disable Qualcomm's quickcharge feature to improve battery longevity since it's a non-removable battery. And it's a 60% larger battery than the iPhone 5, so it is going to take longer.

lightning launcher / go launcher ex (I prefer either over Nova), wifi analyzer (see all the signals, watch them go in and out to find a sweetspot or the like), power toggles (quick access widget), file manager (any old random one.), The Bard's tale (self explanatory if you've ever played it.)...

Re: HTC One not for me, not now anyway. Well, a couple of things I suppose I can recommend is trying Lightning Launcher and lowering screen brightness. I know I've gained 1-2 hours of on-screen time on my old Nexus One (waiting for my T-mobile HTC One to come) versus the nova and go launchers...
