Thanks for the replies. I've read a few comments about hiss and low volume (Engadget review, for one), so I'm wondering if I'm expecting too much soundwise from a smart phone. iPod/iPhone have never been well reviewed for pure sound quality (although I haven't looked at them in quite some time)...
