Think I solved it by holding down " globe" symbol next to space bar, it asks you to choose English Qwerty , then £ sign appeared !! I had to go to settings first and " add a keyboard"( not English US) Choose " English UK" then hold down globe thing while you are beginning to type something.

Go to 3 mini dots at top right of your deleted emails page--click and select "settings"-- then " general settings"--then tick bottom box ( swipe to delete box)-- then go to your deleted emails and swipe ' em !!! All gone !!

Probably all know this by now-- but on Nexus 7 go up to top right of deleted emails screen,where the three mini dots are-- click that-- you will see "settings" option-- click that and choose 3rd option( forget what its called)-- deleted emails will all vanish !!---worked for me !!
