I have a "yakju" Galaxy Nexus on AT&T and I've been seeing this for a while (it started sometime in the 4.1.x timeframe, perhaps) -- my wifi/cell signal strength indicators would go gray, leaving me with no data connectivity. Sometimes switching between airplane and regular mode fixes it...
