That's not the way it was working. I would tap the screen to wake to the lock screen.

I have a galaxy s7 active and used to be able to check the time at night while it was charging. All I would do was tap the screen and the screen would wake for a few seconds to show the time. I had to do a factory reset and it no longer works that way. I don't want to use the always on display...
