Same thing happens to me. Very embarrassing to have my phone start blasting music at work.

Had my boss call me with an identical issue... Emails on an imap server wouldn't update status after initially syncing. So his spam filter on his mac would toss spam out of the inbox but he would still be swimming in it on his phone. Emails he read on his mac would be unread on his phone...
