I have a Sprint GNex on 4.2.1 with stock kernal and currently have the bootloader unlocked and rooted.

My work is doing a pilot program for BYOD and installing MobileIron and a Secure Apps to allow you to get your work email, calendar, and contacts from your personal device. The issue I am running into is they require you to not havea rooted/jailbroken/homebrewed phone....ok no biggie I guess. I unrooted the device but they are still saying it is not allowed to access the data as it is not a secure device. I am guessing that MobileIron does something to check the status of the bootloader?....or maybe it looks for a particular file (and if it exists, whether in use or not) flags the device as rooted. I know I got it unrooted as SU is gone and Titanium Backup says cant get root access. I was not really wanting to relock the bootloader as they requires a data wipe etc.

So my questions (if they have an answer):
    1) What is MobileIron flagging as a rooted device?
    2) Whats the best way to backup phone data in 4.2.1 outside of Titanium Backup (not sure if Google backs up app data (game levels, notes)?
    3) If having to relock the bootloader is the only way, whats the easiest way to relock and remain on 4.2.1 and get back up to where I was before the wipe (especially without having Titanium Backup working since I wont have root access)?

You would think that you can have the best of both worlds and be able to have some access to your personal data.
Thanks for your help in advance!

You can try carbon backup. It is not as extensive as Titanium Backup, but is supposedly the next best thing. I don't use it, but it seems to be a good app.
Read more at Carbon: the way Google should be doing backup on Android | Android Central or other sites.

Personally, I wouldn't want to use my personal device with my work exchange server - I don't want them to be able to look at my personal stuff, or having the ability to wipe my device if they suspect that it is lost (even if it is really not lost) - but it is a benefit - and I can see why one would rather carry just one device rather than two.

Yes I would use carbon to back up to the cloud or use the usb connection to a computer you don't need root for carbon. As far as I know carbon is for all app data this includes game levels, for notes (you must mean word documents, spreadsheet docs etc) then either email them to your self or use Google drive.

Overall I know that Google will backup all my contacts and gmail etc. The main stuff when I say Game level, notes etc....I am mainly referring to anything that is "app data" not really documents or spreadsheets. Not sure how much Google really backs up as I have used Titanium backup from day 1.

Carbon should be able to back up your app data then. Try it out, verify your data backups, and then, relock.

I use a BYOD program at work and it was a great decision for me. We had similar restrictions and I know there was a list of approved devices. I don't know if that's the case with yours, but you may want to check before going through a bunch of hoops.
