if i try taking the battery out as suggested will that possibly erase every thing on my phone? if i do nothing and the battery goes dead what could happen? would plugging it into the charger be a good idea?

Your personal data, as long as you've backed up, will not be lost if the Reset is interrupted by battery removal and replacement. Press Power for ten seconds while the battery is out.
Doing nothing would drain the battery.
Charging would be a good idea, or at least, a harmless thing to do.

Bear in mind also that Factory Resetting can take some time.
