Login defaults to phone app rather than homescreen

I have a friend that has a Moto G. Whenever he logs in it always defaults to the phone app rather than the homescreen. At first we thought it was a widget but upon further examination it is not. It is the actual phone app. While I realize it is a phone first and some may want this behavior he does not want it to do that. He would prefer to be greeted with the homescreen when he authenticates to the device. Anyone have an idea how to change this?

Are they on Lollipop? If so they are likely swiping right to left which opens the phone and swiping up brings you to whatever you left
