I am using android 5.1 on a Moto G3 with the standard Google calendar. Rather than set up different Google calendars for each type of event I would like to have just 1 calendar and have the system recognize the "yoga" events when they are created and make them some pre-selected color. These are not "repeating" events in that they occur at random times and days.

Welcome to Android Central! I don't believe that's possible with Google Calendar. You may want to check out 3rd party calendar apps, like Business Calendar Pro.

You can manually change the color of individual calendar entries when creating/editing them, but there is no way (that I know of) to automatically change the color based on some sort of filter or keyword.
