The aliens have messed with my Motorola G7 Power and stopped me getting notifications of incoming emails! This is with the Gmail app, battery is at 90% so it's nothing to do with battery saver, and I'm still getting sound notification of incoming texts.

What should I be checking to find out what's going on?

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Apps, select the email app you're using, then Notifications. Are they turned on? You can change the default notification tone there as well.

    Hi there B Diddy

Thank you. Notifications are turned on and sound volume is up. What is really weird is that I've now noticed that whereas before I would hit the Gmail icon and new emails appeared at the top of the page which opens i.e. primary account, now I have to go to the three bars top left and tap on "All inboxes" before they show on the list!

    This is driving me nuts!

Make sure your email app isn't Battery Optimized in the system settings

Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery are both off. Phone is currently 85% charged.

Sorry, I'm talking about a different option -- look at the bottom part of this support page about Battery Optimization for individual apps: https://support.motorola.com/us/en/p...ments/MS137433

Thank you for that. Phone now set up as advised by that support page, but I'm now going to be offline for a while. I'll check back here in about 10 hours.

    Hello again and thank you.

OK ... I tried as above but the nearest I could do on this phone was long press > tap info > force stop. The only other options after "info" were open and disable. Whatever, no change. Still no notification of incoming email to primary account (i.e. the page the app opens at), and no sign of the incoming the test email I sent from the wife's phone. To see that, I had to open the app, tap the three bars top left, and tap "All inboxes" - and hey presto there's the new email I sent to the primary address!

So, no change. I don't know quite how weird this is, but I do know it's way beyond my understanding ...

Oh boy, you're going to love this ...

I'm afraid I don't know how to do that: I'm 73 years old, not really a techie person (though I do try) and I've only just mastered using a smartphone. What I can do though is tell you that when I tap notifications there, "show notifications" at the top (above my email address) is on, as is everything else down to and including "outgoing calls". Under "advanced", "Allow notification dot" is on, and at the bottom of the page there is an informative (letter I in circle) that 3 categories are deleted.

Might it be an idea if I uninstall the Gmail app, say a short prayer to a suitable deity, restart the phone then start again with Gmail by once again downloading the app from the Play Store?

No problem -- here's how to take a screenshot and post it here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/gen...d-central.html

But I'll see if I can list the steps to change your notification tones. Keep in mind that system menus can sometimes differ between devices, so let me know if one or more of the steps doesn't quite make sense on your phone (the steps I'm listing are from a Pixel 3 XL):

    1. Swipe down the notification panel and tap the gear icon (or go to your App Drawer and tap the Settings icon there).

    2. Select Apps & Notifications, then See All Apps.

    3. Select Gmail, then tap Notifications.

    4. You will probably see a bunch of options here. Under your email account, tap the WORD "Mail" (NOT the toggle switch).

    5. On the next screen, tap Advanced, then Sound. You should now see a selection screen to choose a different tone.

Thank you for your patience with me. OK ... following your instructions above, all seems to be in order, but I don't understand how changing the notification sound would help as I long ago changed it from the default to one called Vega, and that works just fine for incoming text messages.

Is your feeling that this problem is rooted in the Gmail app or in my phone settings?

Is there any point in me removing the Gmail app then installing a fresh download of it after a restart?

What I was trying to get at was to see if there might be a problem with the default tone that was selected. If selecting a different tone works, then that could be the problem.

I forgot to ask you this -- do you even see the Gmail notification icon in the status bar when an email comes in, or are those also absent?

No, because you only asked "Do you see storage and cache?". Anyhow, for no apparent reason my phone has decided to revert to normal behaviour! I swear I haven't changed a single setting since Thursday, but whereas this time 24 hours ago it was behaving exactly as in my OP, incoming emails now sound my chosen notification sound, a dot appears on the GMail button, and lo and behold there they are at the top of my "Primary" list, just like old times.

This has to be down to the aliens. But whatever, my problem seems to have resolved itself and I'm happy. Thank you very much indeed for your patient help gentlemen.

Best wishes from Norm in England.

    Stay safe!
