Moto G5S contacts

Just got a new car. Paired the phone with it OK but it then asked to download contacts. OK'd that, but it fails all the time. I would like contacts on the car because it has voice commands, so could make a phone call by saying "Call Fred".
Lots of people saying that the download is failing because I have made contacts private, so make them visible, but I can't find an option like this.
Can anyone help with this problem, please?

Where do you see the request to download contacts -- on the car screen? If so, then did you also check the phone screen to see if there was a request there that you had to approve?

The request was indeed on the car screen and no, I did not check the phone screen.
I will do exactly that and report back.

Oh you are so clever! There were, indeed, extra options in the Bluetooth settings for the car connection. Have to say that the page in question didn't stay around for very long, but on the third attempt I caught the page at just the right moment, set the Contacts option and all the contacts downloaded to the car.
