Our Verdict

The Moto G6 may not feel or run like a flagship phone, but it’s not pretending to be one. The G6 offers a lot of solid features, plus extras including some fun camera features, fast charging and it all adds up to make one of the best budget handsets on the market.

The sixth generation of Motorola's G-series leaves positive impressions in more ways than it has negatives. Thoughtful design choices coalesce with stock Android and long battery life for the ultimate in daily usage, and software update convenience.

Each phone has a weak point – just average battery life from the G6, subpar audio on the G6 Play, or inconsistent camera on the G6 Plus, but on aggregate the devices flaunt a very good value-for-money ratio.

With that out of the way, we regret to inform you that the most souped-up member of the trio – the G6 Plus – isn't planned for the American market, but the other two won't leave you disappointed at what Motorola told us will be a $199 price for the G6 Play, and $249 for the G6 stateside.

At these tags you can only find a few Chinese company models in the US, like the Honor 7X. Well, Moto is owned by one, too, and yet the brand has way more cachet with American customers, hasn't gotten in hot water with the intelligence agencies, and its wares are compatible with all US carriers from the get-go.

Motorola Moto G6 review — The Return of the King | Expert Reviews

Motorola Moto G6 review: Verdict

The Moto G6 is a stunning budget phone, and although I have been comparing it to the Honor 9 Lite, it’s actually a level above. It has its shortcomings – there’s a touch of lag on the camera shutter, and the screen isn’t the brightest – but these aren’t deal breakers.

The quality of images the camera can produce is amazing, the design is fabulous, and the software is chock full of useful extras, while still retaining the look of stock Android.

With the Moto G6, Motorola is well and truly back on form. If you’re in the market for a phone at around this price, the only alternative you should consider is its slightly more expensive sibling, the G6 Plus, which is faster, has slightly longer battery life, and a better display.

Verdict

The Motorola Moto G6 represents a quantum shift for the series, moving the once affordable phone into a more premium space. That comes with a slightly inflated price tag, but it feels like the right move for the brand.

The G6 delivers the core features that people will want - dual camera, fast-charging, an 18:9 aspect ratio screen, modern glass design, fingerprint scanner - without the need to pay several hundred pounds for the pleasure.

However, it could have a snappier camera, its positioning as one of three G6 phones does confusingly overlap with the Moto E and Moto X, and the battery life ought to be a little bit better, too.

Overall the G6 represents a compelling buy-outright affordable proposition. It's premium looking, but not quite premium performing. And that's where the likes of the Nokia 6 and Honor 7C will come a-knocking.

Moto G6 Hands-On First Look Review: Return of The (BUDGET) King | Know Your Mobile

Moto G6 Initial Assessment, Price & Availability

The Moto G6 is showing a lot of promise, and has the potential to really pick up and run with its heritage of offering a ton of bang for your buck. More than most previous Moto G handsets, the Moto G6 appears to be an enticing prospect for a mass audience with a highly competitive and affordable price point, while also offering features that until now have largely been the territory of flagship-class smartphones.

Should we spend more?

There are real differences between the Moto G6 and a phone four times the price. Of course there are. But as such benefits become centred ever more on what were once considered secondary or tertiary elements, and fine-tuning the final five percent of the basics, perhaps it’s time to ask whether we are really good enough to really appreciate them.

This is a great phone for the price. If it had NFC it would be even better.
yeah, no NFC means this is a no go for me. A real shame as I would've got one in a heartbeat otherwise.
Yeah, shame on me for not knowing this, prior to purchasing one for my wife.

Oh well, she's not bothered by it, so no big deal. It is what would stop me from getting one for myself.
