Well I had the Moto X for all of six days when the camera stopped working. When I launch the camera app the screen stays dark like nothing is being viewed by the lens. I have the two icons on the bottom of the screen for the video cam and the switch button to the front camera. After about five to ten seconds a window opens on the screen that says " camera error ". I hit the Ok button and the app closes. I did trouble shooting with ATT and Moto Tech. We cleared the cache on the phone app, tried a third party camera app, and did a factory reset. Nothing worked. The phone is being replaced by Motorola. Not exactly the way I wanted to start off my experience with an Android phone after coming from six years of trouble free from a Blackberry Bold.

Welcome to AC. I understand the frustration that comes with receiving a faulty device. The good thing is, you're being taken care of. The issue was probably a one-off manufacturing error. I've fixed plenty of Blackberries in my day as well. These defects happen no matter which OS you choose to run. Even iPhones and Windows Phones have an acceptable rate of failure out of the factory.
Sorry this had to happen, but I'm glad Moto is taking care of you.

Hey roadrunner I had the same issue with my Moto X!!! Your the first person I've found yet to post anything relating to this issue! I got mine about 1 month ago. Last week att/Motorola released a firmware update to improve the camera's performance (which was pretty terrible if I'm honest) and after I updated my device the built-in camera ceased to function. Each time I open the app I was greeted with a black screen and a message that simply read "camera error." Like you, I tried the factory reset route and that did not work. So I contacted AT&T (who had no clue what I was talking about) and then I contacted Motorola and while they too were unaware of the issue, they at least knew what the Moto X was (unlike AT&T). They tried to diagnose the problem by connecting to my device via an app called "rescue me" and were likewise unable to solve the problem. At this point the lady told me I could send it in for repairs (which would take about two weeks) or just go to my local AT&T store and see if they would replace it (which would take only 24 hours). Needless to say I went with the latter option! Lol...
