Moto X skipping 4.3, moving directly to 4.4

We are moving directly to 4.4. I dont like to discuss timing. It just puts a lot of stress on the team, and there is always a chance we find something which delays us a bit.
Rest assured, we are on it. You have seen the speed with which we are moving as a Google company, that shall continue.

While interesting that it is skipping 4.3, I don't think anyone really thought that the moto x would not get 4.4. With no promises on time frame, anything is possible. Judging from past experience, don't expect anything soon. 3 to 6 months is a realistic time table for unlocked devices. Carriers longer.

We will see. All experience with android updates for phones is working against them...

HTC one announced 90 days for USA versions.. Will have to see. I hope its sooner than 90 days.

I think this instance is a little different though since the Moto X is close to stock Android. It shouldn't be as intensive as updating TouchWiz or Sense for example.

Looking at the list of features for the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat, I'm only seeing one that I may be interested in.

The future is calling (new phone app) - The new phone app automatically prioritizes your contacts based on the people you talk to the most. You can also search for nearby places and businesses, your contacts, or people in your Google Apps domain.

I don't use my phone as a phone enough for this.

A smarter caller ID (caller ID by Google) - Whenever you get a call from a phone number not in your contacts, your phone will look for matches from businesses with a local listing on Google Maps.

Might be handy, but I rarely get calls like this.

Print on the go - Now you can print photos, documents, and web pages from your phone or tablet. You can print to any printer connected to Google Cloud Print, to HP ePrint printers, and to other printers that have apps on Google Play.

This would probably let me print more file types. Even still, I'm more likely to do that kind of work on a tablet or laptop.

Pick a file, any file - From apps like Quickoffice, you can open and save files on Google Drive, other cloud storage services, or your device. And with quick access to recently used files, it's easier than ever to send the file you were just working on.

I haven't run into a case where I've needed to open a file that wasn't already possible with Drive or Quickoffice or the gallery.

Planning on getting a smartwatch (Pebble). The functionality will be on my wrist and not really needed on my phone.

I haven't run into any issues on my Moto X with multitasking. But if this is more optimized, I'm all for it.

Just swipe the edge of the screen to bring back your status bar and navigation buttons.

I read Android Central via the app and the rest via the browser. Movies already play in full screen.

HTC I am sure has had access to 4.4 a while before launch because of the GPe one. It seems the GPe devices are running on not-so-stock stock android, so htc would have needed time to modify it to get it on the GPe one.

It's should not be as time consuming, but write a new kernel for the special chipset and getting all the extra features to work plus the level of optimization x users brag about all the time is not a quick fix. Far from it I would imagine. Plus there is the issue of all the carrier bloatware that must be working to the carriers' satisfaction.

Wonder if I can get the OTA while my bootloader is unlocked and rooted.
